It cannot have escaped your notice that hearts, roses and cupid’s arrows have sprung up in shops replacing snowflakes, reindeer and jolly bearded rotund men in red suits. Yes folks you may have survived the carnage that is Christmas and the festive season with your bank balance and your liver intact (barely); but now before you even have a chance to take a moment, gather your breath and mop your brow you have to brace yourself for the romantic invasion. Which is like the British invasion in the ‘50’s but instead of a mop-haired quartet of musicians we have to follow rules on the correct way of being in love; February is the month that dictates that the amount you spend is in direct correlation to how much you love your significant other.
You have two choices this month, you can rage against the man, shun all romance and become the Grinch that killed romance (many men in the 14th century are turning in their tombs) and break your dulcet darlings heart. Or you could choose the red pill; stand on the highest point and claim that your Pop Lap is the lead to your pencil, the milk to your cheese and the egg to your mayonnaise. Get in to the spirit of things, be the hopeless romantic, stand outside her window holding a boom box playing her favourite song (iPod docking station to the younger generations) in the rain.
We know that you already spent money on her buying her the most perfect Christmas present and you sent her flowers on the first day back at work, but you already have the romance gene you just need to crank it up a bit.
When you buy a romantic gift for your sweet, sexy significant other this Valentine’s Day just remember that it is still the thought that counts, no matter what the greeting card companies want you to think. All you need to do is show her you love her, take her to a spa for the weekend or take her to her favourite movie. Quite often it is the little things that count, quite often it’s the breakfast’s in bed and the chocolates that you snuck in to her bag with a love note that do the trick. Of course the big ticket items don’t hurt either, like the perfumes or the diamonds; gifts like that can only stand in your favour – almost like the Hunger Games but without the incredibly twisted government or all the killing and Stockholm Syndrome relationship that develops.
