Honour Our Heritage
Heritage Day (24 September) has always been a time to celebrate the rich cultures, religions and traditions of our nation. In recent times, this day has also become a special time in South African families – a time to spend together celebrating, having a braai and enjoying all that our wonderful country has to offer. And after the Covid 19 pandemic, increased fuel prices and other issues that have kept us apart from our families, it’s time to make this occasion one for the books and party to the max. So, how do you make Heritage Day ‘ayoba’? Here’s all you need to do to make this special event that much more unique and exceptional for your friends and family, with everything from having a Braai Day celebration to sending them unique African gifts!
Stand ‘Braai’ Their Side
What would South African heritage be without a good, old-fashioned braai with those people who are most important to us? So, naturally, every Braai Day needs to start with lighting the coals (and fighting over how best to braai), sipping on your favourite bottle of beer and munching beef droëwors. But, of course, none of these are worth the effort without our family and friends by our sides (even if they aren’t braai masters). Keep them in a good mood by decking out the stoep, with nothing but the best! Think gourmet snacks, decadent chocolate hampers, and even a bottle of South African wine, all guaranteed to get the celebration going! All these amazing treats, as well as the braai, are sure to make time spent with loved ones even more special!
Have Your ‘Pic’ Of Heritage Day Activities
Speaking of spending some much needed time with friends and family, why not enjoy the warmer weather outdoors? Not only is a picnic a great opportunity to spend more time with loved ones and work on your tan, it’s also a great chance to enjoy South Africa’s greatest love – food! From our favourite dried fruit and nuts to decadent Halaal biltong, there’s nothing better to indulge in than a picnic (other than a braai, of course)! Don’t forget to cherish the season with a new picnic basket and personalised blanket, for everyone to sit on when devouring their deli platters and fresh South African fruit baskets!
‘Float’ Their Boat
With summer on the way, Heritage Day in South Africa is bound to be pretty warm. So, why not swap out the braai for a pool party? Okay, we know South Africans could never give up a braai! So, what about a braai by the pool? It’s the perfect excuse to get everyone outdoors (including the teens), enjoying the sunshine, chomping away at tasty snack tins, and sharing new braai recipes. Think about it, drinks chilling in the ice bucket, kids swimming happily with their pool floats and the refreshing smell of sunblock clinging to the towels… Sounds like the perfect way to spend some family time, doesn’t it? Just don’t forget the swimming shorts for him, African print T-shirts for her, and protective headwear for them both!
Make It A Time Of Sharing
Time spent with those who really matter is just why Heritage Day is celebrated and, as such, it’s important to keep them close. However, that can sometimes be tricky, especially if your friends and family stay far away. In such cases, there’s no better way to keep them in your heart than by sending a gift straight to their door! Our gifts include a rainbow of spoils, from fresh king proteas, and other South African flowers, to delicious baked goods, and everything in between. Whether you’re sending coffee and tea sets, big 5 plush toys or a cookie tin, from the Bakery at NetFlorist, your loved ones will feel as special as they are when you treat them with a Heritage Day gift!
Local Is ‘Lekker’
Whether you spend 24 September at home enjoying a beer crate, with your friends at a pub or by sending local gifts to your family, make sure your Heritage Day celebration is ‘ayoba’. Afterall, celebrating and honouring our rainbow nation starts at home. So, no matter what you decide to do on this wonderful day, be sure to spend it with the ones who mean the most, and make Heritage Day history!
