There is nothing more spectacular than watching a flower bloom. It holds so much wonder and beauty and promise! Here in South Africa, we have a thousands of beautiful blooms of all shapes, kinds and colours but do you know anything about flowers?  Luckily for you I’m here with a whole host of flower facts and info.

  • There are more than 2,50,000 species of flowering plants in the world.
  • Titan Arum are the world’s largest flower and is almost 10 feet in height. Due to its horrible smell of rotten flesh, it is also known as corpse flower.
  • Lilies are presumed to have originated from the Far East and are one of the oldest plants known.
  • White flowers tend to be more strongly scented than their colored kin.

  • Some plants such as orchids do not need soil to grow-they get all of their nutrients from the air.
  • Carnivorous plants are flowering plants that eat bugs and small animals! For example, the Venus fly trap has leaves covered by little hairs. When a bug lands on the hairs, the trap snaps shut and digestive juices digest the bug.
  • Dandelion flowers can be made into jellies, added to salads, or made into tea.
  • Moon flowers bloom only at night, closing during the day.
