stop and smell the peonies

Called the queen of flowers, the peony flower is the national floral symbol of China. The Chinese name for peony means “beautiful” and in Chinese culture the flowers represent riches, prosperity and honour. In Western culture, the peony serves as the symbol for the 12th wedding anniversary, and in the language of flowers, represents good fortune and a happy marriage. In Victorian times, it might also have represented bashfulness, since mischievous nymphs were said to hide in its magnificent petals.

It has to be said that peonies are a magical type of flower and what makes them doubly special is that they are only around for a very limited period as they are one of the most seasonal flowers in the world. In South Africa, peony flowers reach our markets in summer,  around late October to early November and are only available for about a month or so. What does that mean for you? It means that you should buy peonies as soon as they become available!
